Bio
Philippe Rheault is director of The China Institute at the University of Alberta. Under his leadership, the institute has deepened its focus on China’s role in emerging global challenges and on pathways for informed Canada-China engagement.
Before joining The China Institute in 2023, Rheault spent 25 years in the Canadian diplomatic service, including five postings across Greater China and two assignments as consul general, heading two of Canada’s four diplomatic missions in the People’s Republic of China. He also serves as adjunct professor of political science at the University of Alberta and delivers advanced China courses for the Canada School of Public Service and the Canadian Foreign Service Institute.
His current work explores how middle powers can navigate strategic competition between the United States and China. He is a frequent commentator in Canadian and international media. Rheault holds degrees in philosophy, political science and law, and is professionally fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, English and French.
