Bio

Matt Malone is research director of digitalization, security and democracy at CIGI. Matt is a trusted scholar and practitioner at the intersection of law, technology and government accountability. His research focuses on the legal protection of secret information, including trade secrecy, access to information, privacy and cybersecurity, and he combines scholarship with practical policy insight.

Matt is a director of the Economic Security and Corporate Espionage Network, an initiative funded through the Department of National Defence Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) program, and has been called on to brief various government committees and policy communities on matters of digital privacy, access to information and social media governance.

His professional experience spans academia, legal practice and journalism, most recently as an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, an academic partner at the Investigative Journalism Foundation and a fellow at the Balsillie School of International Affairs.

Matt is a graduate of the University of Toronto, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and McGill University. After law school, he practised law full-time in California at Morrison & Foerster and Van Dermyden Makus.
