What Is the AI Empowerment for a Prosperous Future Program?
The AI Empowerment for a Prosperous Future program aims to guide artificial intelligence (AI) development toward societally beneficial outcomes and to apply AI-enabled tools and methods to enhance policy design and governance. Humanity faces pressing challenges, including global public health threats, climate change and protecting shared public resources such as air and water. As these issues become increasingly international in scope, there is a clear opportunity to harness rapid AI advances to strengthen governance approaches for all.
Program Approach
This program is currently under development. The program team is actively seeking expert perspectives across a range of disciplines to inform the program’s research approach and contribute to its work.
The AI Empowerment program’s research focuses on three connected themes: cooperative AI, causal AI and agile AI. Exploring these areas, the program will seek to drive strategic impact and answer key questions such as:
- As AI agents gain autonomy to interact with the world and adapt their behaviour, how can we equip them to achieve shared goals and improve social welfare through enhanced decision-making in governance and diplomacy? (cooperative AI)
- What strategies can we employ to promote AI-powered causal insights for policy impact that can identify the drivers of change and precise interventions that deliver results? (causal AI)
- While the future of AI advances is unknown, how can we leverage AI in strategic foresight and embed anticipatory AI capacity into governance frameworks? (agile AI)
